How to get rid of Puffy Eyes
The reason for puffy eyes is inadequate sleep, dehydration of the body and the body trying to compensate for this loss by storing up water, dietary imbalance and excessive alcohol intake. Most times, this can be healed with certain home remedies. However, it is important to understand the reason behind the cause and nip that in the bud, if possible, to prevent further occurrence of this problem.
Symptoms of puffy eyes
Eyes may tend to become puffy and swollen, usually in the morning and both upper and lower eyelids may be affected by this problem. This may be accompanied by itching and/or redness and persons suffering from puffiness of the eyes may be unable to open or close the eyes.
Causes and relevant course of treatment for puffy eyes
Drinking alcohol or eating salty foods before going to sleep can lower the anti-diuretic hormones (ADH) in the body, causing temporary puffiness. However, if puffy eyes occur due to allergies like use of feather pillows, linen fabric, face-creams, dust, pollen or food, these need to be medically treated. Aging can cause skin to lose elasticity and sag, causing puffy eyes and so can menstruation as water retention takes place. Persons suffering from high blood pressure, skin rashes like Eyelid dermatitis and other diseases like Blepharitis, Orbital cellulitis and Chalazions may also suffer puffy eyes. Kidney infections, thyroid problems and using drugs like lithium are other causes.
Home Remedies for Puffy Eyes
- Staying hydrated and lowering the salt intake relieves the body of the stress of water retention and keeps the urine clear. This minimizes the chances of salt being retained in the body in fluid form and later gathering in the skin around the eyes.
- Steer clear of bacteria and avoid using any eye product older than a few months as bacteria in the make-up can be transferred onto the eyes, causing eyelids to swell. For the same reason, do not share cosmetics for the eyes with anyone else either.
- Wearing a mask filled with cold water/gel for a few minutes in the morning or wrapping bits of ice in paper towels and placing it on the eyelids helps reduce the swelling.
- Storing eye creams in the refrigerator helps keep them cool and reduces puffy eyes. Eye creams should be applied onto the eyelid gently with the ring finger as this stimulates fluid drainage from the eyelid area.
- Soaking cotton-wool pads in ice-cold milk, squeezing most of the liquid out and then placing them on the eyes with repetitions in about 15 minutes helps to warm them up and brighten the white of eye, while reducing puffiness.
- Black/chamomile teabags soaked in cold water and subsequently placed on the eyelids for 15 minutes reduces puffy eyes as the tannic acid in tea constricts blood vessels and reduces inflammation.
- Kitchen helpmates for puffy eyes are slices of cucumber, potatoes, or apples; when places over puffy eyelids for 10-15 minutes, these help reduce dark circles too.
