Shaving Tips for Men
For most men, shaving is an everyday activity and as mundane as brushing the teeth. However, the whole experience of shaving can be elevated to another level with a few professional inputs from skin care experts that can guide men to shave better and gain an edge over the ordinary, routine look.
Common problems associated with shaving range from razor rashes and burns to dry, flaky skin, nicks and bruises to lacking the smooth, clean cuts of a salon treatment. These can all be tackled with a little shaving know-how.
- Experts advise against shaving as soon as waking up in the morning. Instead, giving the skin time to get refreshed, the occasional puffiness to subside (which may occur due to fluid retention during the night) helps men gain more time and focus on the morning ritual of a close shave.
- Using an exfoliator like a cleanser/scrub, helps eradicate dead skin cells and open up skin pores of the skin for a clean edge to the shaving experience.
- A wet stubble is easier to clean and warm/hot water used for moistening it before shaving causes the hair shafts to swell, allowing the blade to cut the hair, not the skin.
- The shaving cream should be massaged into the stubble; those containing vitamin and Aloe Vera provide a soothing shave and form a protective seal razor rashes and burns.
- The razor blade should be sharp, rinsed often in hot water and slow, short strokes used for a good shave.
The razor must always move in the direction of hair growth and never against the grain as the latter can cause painful conditions like redness, rashes, razor burn and ingrown hairs.
- Following up the shaving process calls for shaving balms or oil-free moisturizers that can soothe and protect the face. A good moisturizer/shaving balm will leave the face feeling nourished, not tight and dry.
- Remember that loads of lather does not translate into a good shave and most products that offer extra suds contain sodium laureate that can irritate the facial skin.
Extra dose of shaving tips: some dos and don’ts
- Avoid washing the face in cold water before shaving. This can close the skin pores and make the hair harder to cut. A warm water face rinse is a better option when shaving is intended.
- Aftershaves contain alcohol and can irritate certain skin types; therefore, one needs to be prudent when applying these. They can dry the skin and sting after the initial fresh effect, which does not last long. A light moisturizer is a better bet after shaving.
- To get the full effect of a clean shave, it is advisable to use a nourishing after-shave lotion, which contains SPF of at least 15 and gives protective seal against dryness and sun exposure to the skin.
The song ‘Cant hurry love’ can well apply to a close, clean shave and men need to take their time over getting a good, clean shave to turn heads, often and for the right reason.
