Oily Skin Type & Care
Oily skin type has over reactive sebaceous glands that make the face shiny, particularly down the central panel-your nose, forehead and chin, also known as the T-zone. The pores of persons with oily skin type are enlarged and prone to blackheads, pimples and Acne problems; thus, oily skin requires has special cleansing needs for keeping pores unclogged and prevent accumulation of dirt on the skin surface.
Combination Oily skin is another type that has pores only open in the T-zone and though the texture is oily, the person may have firm, smooth cheeks and forehead. The sebaceous activity does not extend to the cheeks and this kind of oily skin can have areas of dehydrated patches on cheeks and forehead. Therefore, the combination oily skin type can have a shiny forehead, nose and chin, with tendency for normal skin -dry skin around eyes, outer cheek area and neck and still be prone to blackheads and blemishes in the T-zone.
Causes and benefits of Oily skin
Over activity of sebaceous glands present just under the skin are responsible for the excess oil given out. This adds a greasy shine to the skin and can occur at any age, but oily skin is most common during adolescence. The one great advantage of having an oily skin is that this type ages at a much slower rate than other skin types and therefore delays skin problems like the appearance of lines, wrinkles and blemishes.
Tips and homeremedies for Oily skin care
- Oily skin should be cleaned only two or three times with a specifically designed product and excessive washing should be avoided as it will strip the skin of oil and stimulate the oil glands, causing possible over activity of sebaceous glands.
- After cleansing oily skin, all traces must be rinsed off thoroughly and a toner/astringent used on the oily areas of the skin. Astringents help control excess oil and can be used through the day.
- Since oily skin attracts more dust and grime, it should be cleansed with hot water and soap to prevent the pores from clogging as hot water cuts through the skin more effectively.
- Any skin care products that deplete the skin of the oil layer must be avoided as these can cause the glands to work overtime to compensate for the loss of natural oils. These can be recognized by the after effect of the skin feeling tight and dry, as their use shrinks the upper layers of the skin, restricting oil flow through the pores, leading to blockages and breakouts.
- Moisturizing is not a daily basis routine for oily skin unless; the face feels tight after washing. A light, oil-free moisturizer can be used to overcome this feeling and those containing mineral oils and cocoa butter, kept at arm’s length.
- Makeup for oily skin needs to be chosen with a bit of forethought as well and oil-free products that are water based and do not clog pores, are a good bet.
